Q&A:

Can I tan naked?

Yes.  But remember your skin has memory.  The parts of your body that have previously been exposed to the sun can tolerate more exposure.  We recommend removing your underwear/bathing suit halfway through your session and progressively exposing your entire body for more with each subsequent visit.

Do I have to wear eye wear?

Yes.  A tan is created by UV rays penetrating the upper layers of your skin.  The skin of the eyelid is the thinnest in your body.  The light passing through will cause irreparable damage with long term UV exposure.

Do indoor tanning lotions really work?

Yes.  Accelerators stimulate melanin’s rise to the surface of your skin.  As melanin encounters UV light, it turns brown.  The more melanin on the surface, the deeper the tan.  Accelerators also keep the skin moist thus minimizing flaking.

Can I use outdoor tanning lotions in the beds?

No, any product with a mineral oil base will discolour the acrylic surface and, due to their need to be waterproof, are not designed for easy clean-up and sanitizing.

How often can I Tan?

You must leave a minimum of 24 hours between tans.  The tan will show up 2-4 hours after you tan.  Do not worry about not seeing results right away.

Will I be tanned after the first session?

Not necessarily.  The skin needs a few sessions to gradually develop the self defense mechanism known as a tan.  This process cannot be sped up.  Your tan will develop within 3-5 sessions.

How many times do I have to come get a tan?

We recommend an exposure schedule of 3-4 times per week to develop your base tan, and 1-2 times a week to maintain it.

Sun Tanning Without Sunburn

Much has been said in the media about the dangers of over exposure to ultraviolet light.  These dangers are derived almost exclusively from the long-term effects of acute, blistering sunburn.  When tanning with sunlight it is practically impossible to avoid initial burning.  Indoor tanning places itself in a different league from tanning under natural sunlight, because the length of exposure time and the specific proportions of the ultraviolet are controlled and are designed to both maximize tanning and to minimize any dangers of burning.

Sun Protection

The ultraviolet light from the sun associated with tanning is composed of UVA and UVB rays.  The skin contains special cells (melanocytes) capable of producing melanin and releasing it as pigment.  UVB radiation stimulates these melanocyte cells to produce more pigment, which is then browned by the UVA rays as the pigment rises to the skin surface.  Tanning beds use much less UVB than in natural sunlight, so as to avoid burning, but enough to produce new pigment which will produce a deeper, longer-lasting tan than with just UVA.

Pigment Information

Remember: it takes the melanocytes 2 to 3 days to produce the pigment after stimulation of the melanocytes.  This means that you should not expect a dark tan after just one session as is indicated above.  A suntan alone, thanks to both the pigment formation and darkened pigmentation, produces some suntan protection – much more than merely the darkening of already existing pigment.  This is often overlooked by critics of indoor tanning who often do not appreciate the role played by UVB rays in tanning formation.
